Although we know for certain that Cervantes tried to escape from captivity in Algiers on four occasions, a consensus has not yet been reached on the reasons behind his survival of these adventures, at a time when recaptured fugitives suffered hard torments that served as examples in order to maintain the principal economic activity of that dominium of the Turkish Empire. After a brief review of the assumptions made by many critics and biographers, this work explores the documents related to Cervantes’ captivity alongside other sources from the period, finding an answer in the thesis that there existed ties of friendship and cooperation between Christian captives and the influential community of new Muslims in the Barbary Coast of the 16th and 17th centuries.
