The architextual Quixote: poetics of the quixotic myth

This paper offers a theory of the myth of Don Quixote illustrated through a corpus of twenty-five works written in four different languages (Spanish, English, French, and German). The introduction describes the obstacles for the study of Don Quixote as a myth, particularly the objections to considering it as such originating in French myth-criticism, and attempts to overcome them through the concept of ‘architext’. Next, it proceeds to differentiate the constitutive units of the quixotic myth (mythemes and motifs), to which three further categories are added (regimes, types, and degrees), by means of which its great versatility can be accounted for. The conclusion proposes a new conception of myth, one that is dynamic because it is conjugated in several variants (myth, type, and trope), instead of the traditional and static one that defines it through the recurrence of a set of invariants.
