Poetic rhythm in prose involves different phonetic and thought components harmonized by means of an aesthetic pattern worthy of description. In this paper, I develop some aspects of Cervantes’ prose rhythm as a means to appreciate the expressive system of Don Quixote. To fulfill my purpose, I approach the rhythmic constituents of two fragments of narrative and oratorical prose from the First part of the novel, in which various melodic formants such as syllabic quantity rhythm, accentual rhythm and ringing rhythm can be appreciated. Unlike rhythm in lyric poetry, we point out that rhythm in prose is governed by the statute of numerus, by virtue of the systematic use of sentence periods of similar duration that generate the sensation of unity and balance. In this way, the present essay intends to contribute to the subject of the musical presence in Don Quixote from its textual realization, declaring the polyvalent character of its prose rhythm, which calls to correct in any case the merely metrical criteria.
