This essay analyses Miguel de Cervantes’ Numancia in reference to the basic characteristics of historic themed theater, specifically within the perspective of Lope de Vega’s historic theater. While la Numancia presents the dramatic basis of what is the formula of ‘Lopescian’ theater, it is nonetheless important to consider common categories among the various theatrical works based on la Numancia to recognize the fundamentals of historical themes. As such, an analysis of the various temporalities implied by the dramatization of a historic fact can shed light over differences between the interpretations of various authors and summarize the specificity of the ‘Cervantian’ tragedy. This specificity is related to the possible interpretations that la Numancia avails to its readers, in accordance with the nondramatic works of Cervantes and in opposition with Lope de Vega’s historic theater.
