Quixonography: Traces of the Graphic Universe of Don Quixote

This essay examines the development and scope of Quixonography, a term coined for the first time in these pages, understood as the critical study of graphic representations of Don Quixote de la Mancha. It begins with a conceptual definition and a review of the five historical stages of illustrations. Representative formats are then examined, including textual illustrations, as well as the progression from collection to critical cataloging, highlighting attributes such as transculturation and aggiornamento. Contemporary approaches are also addressed, showing how illustrations serve as critical tools to study the cultural reception of Don Quixote. Finally, the field is linked to iconography and iconology, with particular emphasis on Rachel Schmidtʼs book Critical Images.
