Analysis of the Translation of the Proverbs into Modern Greek in the Second Part of Don Quixote

Melina Panagiotidou is the author of a recent translation into Modern Greek of the Cervantesʼ novel The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha. To begin with, it is evident what a feat it is to undertake a translation of these characteristics, since literary translation requires the mastery of both the output language and the target language, as well as knowledge of the culture that supports each of the working languages. For this reason we believe it is convenient to analyze the translation of the proverbs that Don Quixote utters in the second part, despite the fact that he precisely reproached Sancho Panza for their use, given that this colloquial register represents a challenge in translation and allows us to evaluate the work of a professional translator. The fact is that orality plays a decisive role when translating proverbs and, only taking into account its characteristics, the translation will be satisfactory.
