The early 17c. in Spain saw an explosion in the publication of narrative, starting with the Guzman (1599 and 1604) and including Cervantes’ works. This paper sheds light on patterns of publication and consumption of this genre at the time. It examines published and unpublished documentary data, such as the register of publishing privileges granted by the king to authors and publishers, as well as little-known copies.
