This article deals with two seventeenth-century English works, Moriomachia and Don Zara del Fogo, which, even if they openly display the trace of Don Quixote and have been mentioned in passing by some studies on Cervantes’s presence in English letters, have not been subjected to the Cervantean scrutiny so far. Such scrutiny requires, firstly, being framed in the context of the English reception of Peninsular chivalric romances, including translations, imitations, and parodies. Secondly, this paper analyzes them within this latter group, and more specifically as mock romances, so that they can be distinguished from the quixotic anti-romances similarly inspired by Cervantean parody. With this distinction in mind, the article finally builds a corpus of English anti-chivalric works, which prompts some interesting conclusions about the reception of Don Quixote in Great Britain.
