«Daca la cola, asturiano»: again with Carriazo and his ass in The illustrious scullery-maid

This article explores the role of the ass in the plot of the short novel The Illustrious Scullery-Maid considering its dual representation, as a character and as a symbol. I analyze the complex relationship between Carriazo and the ass, as it is based on the multiple perspectives that Cervantes’ writing unfolds. At the end, Carriazo’s identification with the ass constitutes a transformation, with Ovidian echoes, but in a realistic fashion, from animal to human, thanks to the symbolism of the tail as the purpose of the subject.
