Deceptive perceptions: exploring auditory cognition in Don Quixote through the lens of noise

This article aims at analyzing the causes of Don Quixote’s auditory fallacies in relation to the perception of noises (not voices nor sounds), based on the Aristotelian-Thomistic substratum that permeates all scientific thought of the period in which Cervantes’ work takes shape, and considering the most recent studies on the philosophy of auditory perception. The perception of a noise always involves cognitive processing: what we hear is composed of an auditory stimulus, together with the information concerning it (source, time, circumstance, location), which is inferred by us by means of an inference. The application of the knight’s logical devices is often faulty, and from the preponderant fallacious use of the deductive method in Part I, one passes to the fallacious application of the inductive method itself (reverse accident) in Part II. Both fallacies say the opposite of valid processing and thus become literary devices essential to the ironic tone of Cervantes’ prose. [e.g. I, 20 and II, 41].
