Quixotes without Knowing It. Phantasmagoria and Madness in Tales of German Romanticism

Our contribution aims to draw attention about the influence of Cervantes’ Don Quixote on the fantastic tales of the German Romantics, who were great readers of the Spanish author, even in texts that neither consciously and expressly imitate Cervantes’ work nor belong to the long European tradition of parodies of Don Quixote. This more general influence can be seen in the construction of characters who fall into the category of “sane madmen” who transfigure reality at certain moments and construct phantasmagoria. The secondary characters in these stories offer a realistic contrast to the main character and try to undo his deception. In addition, there is always a strongly idealized woman at the center of the story. Three ‘tales’ by Joseph von Eichendorff, Achim von Arnim and E.T.A. Hoffmann, apparently very different from each other, but united by these common features, have been taken as the basis of the analysis.
